User experience design portfolio

My experience includes conducting user testing sessions, building wireframes, running usability workshops, redeveloping information architectures, and ensuring accessibility through WCAG reviews.

Archery Targets

Heuristic analysis

Use heuristic reviews to quickly identify ways to improve an existing website.

My heuristic analysis of the Career Centre website helped them plan a redevelopment built on a foundation of usability and accessibility.

Complete information architecture (IA) overhaul

Information architecture is the sum of a website's:

  • navigation interface,

  • page templates,

  • page hierarchies, search functionality and

  • metadata.

I have created successful IAs for many websites and applications over my career.

For an example, see my recommended menu restructure changes, as presented to a project committee for a website redevelopment project.

Over my career I have also been responsible for structuring and managing product documentation libraries, including use of the Diátaxis method to organise information.

Content creation that centres usability: a case study

I worked as a website developer at Scitech during their initial adoption of online approaches to science education. Our specialist staff needed guidance on creating web-friendly content.

So, I created the Web Advocates group

Anyone at Scitech who was interested could join.

I ran workshops for this group with activities including:

  • writing for the web,

  • website usability and accessibility,

  • updates and consultation on new digital projects, and

  • gathering feedback from frontline staff with direct visitor experience.

Over three years, I ran 15 workshops.

Web Advocates achievements

Web writing confidence

We received increased content submissions from staff, written in a way that required far less tweaking to make it web-friendly. Staff feedback included boosted confidence to create accessible, user-friendly educational material for our online projects.

Usability advocacy

Our Web Advocates advocated for user-centred approaches to writing website content within their own teams, ensuring every part of the organisation had a stake and sense of pride in our online presence.

Upskilling  staff

In addition to usability and accessibility-focused approaches to writing for the web, I taught our Web Advocates how to use Joomla, RocketCMS, HootSuite and SharePoint so that they were able to directly contribute to our online projects.

Improved self-service features

Front-of-house staff involved with the Web Advocates group helped inform additional website tweaks that notably reduced the number of phone calls and emails these staff needed to answer, as website information more precisely supported our guests' visit-planning process.

The overall result was a massive increase in staff uptake of our online tools, furthering Scitech's mission to  inspire engagement by all Western Australians in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Example wireframe work

I created this wireframe in Balsamiq as part of planning a major update to the structure of occupational information on the Career Centre website. Your can click the image for a PDF version.
